Youth Success Story of the Month
Newcomer Youth Exhibit Event, August 31st 2010
Newcomer Youth Exhibit was organized by the Newcomer Youth Program for Summer Program youth participants, their friends and family. This was the first exhibit of its kind where the youth participants had an opportunity to exhibit their works in various mediums to present their experiences during the two –month long summer program (July & August). Youth participants and staff also raised funds (a modest sum of $100 to support the presenters) through the event for the upcoming annual youth volunteer appreciation party in December.
12 youth presented their poem, art work, video, PowerPoint, sparring demonstration, poster and song. There were 40 community members including the youth who attended the event hosted at the Parkdale library. The presenters wowed the crowd with how much confidence and skills they have gained through the program. An excerpt from one of the poems by a presenter, “Two months seemed like 2 weeks. And I still can’t remember whether the number of sessions we had were 4, 5, or 6. But I do remember what I learnt. Whether it was networking, drawing or caring about how much money I earned….” (for the full poem by Norbu and Thinley, please read under literature section.)
Casa loma’s and Maple Leaf’s donations were one of the highlights of the event since they were the most prized items in the door prizes. Even though newcomer youth may not be playing hockey as much but they are familiar with the sport as a big part of Canadian culture. The lucky winners were Neon (Maple’s leaf authentic Kaberly autographed plaque), a youth who came out to support one of his friend presenter, and Aman (Casa Loma ticket for 4 valued at $72) who presented his art at the exhibit . The other priceless door prize was a “word youth poster” (words contributed by summer youth participants and designed by Kalsang) won by Tsetan Namdol.
The event was also covered by the Toronto Community News reporter, Erin Hatfield for the Parkdale community, “the Villager”. The story came out in the September 9th issue. (Click here for the news article)
For the month of September, all the summer newcomer youth program mentors and participants are the successful winners. Congratulations!!!

LiteraturePNYC Summer Program If i was given one wish, it would be to start my summer all over again. This is to remember the wonderful moments we have experienced till the end which is now and it only makes me say wow Two months seemed like 2 weeks and I still can't remeber whether the member of seesions we had was 4, 5 or 6, but i do remember what i learned whether it was networking, drawing or caring about how much money we earned I also remeber all the trips we had high park, center island and the wether wasnt too bad. sorouren park was kinda new to me but it brought me closer to parkdale because of all the foods and farmers I could see. and this is all about parkdale about all new commers here living in parkdale. When the program first begin, we were only new faces to you but we soon became friends after a month or two hopefully, we keep this relation even if the summer is over you know what they say, friendship lasts forever. as an ending to this reminiscent, we should all cherish each moment we've spent here, and hope that we have even better summer next year.
