Youth Success Story of the Month/LiteraturePersonal Accounts of Parkdale Youth 4 Tobacco Free sports and Recreation Project’s Outreach Activity Experience on Oct 2nd, Saturday at the Parkdale Harvest Festival hosted by Greenest City:
"I met many different people during the Tobacco Free Sports and Recreation Project's outreach at Parkdale Harvest Festival. Among them was a fairly old African lady whom I had the longest conversation with and she talked about her chain-smoker husband who's still not able to quit from a long time. I assumed that she had already been through depression since she had attempted many times to make her husband quit smoking. But when she spoke to me, her expression was not that of a depressed lady but more of a someone who had already given up. Based on my knowledge on tobacco, I strongly suggested her not to lose hope as quitting smoke for a day can significantly change your health within that day and imagine if quitting permanently. In the end, she was friendly and left with my words but I hope she takes it for real." -Tashi Choemphel "My experience in this project had been wonderful in a sense that it gave me chance to develop myself and an opportunity to be proactive in my community. To be honest, at first I thought it was going to be boring project about ‘Tobacco-free recreation and sports’. Since I have never used tobacco, I didn’t thought it would be important to know much about it. However, now when I think about this project, I have a different impression, I now think it’s an awesome project to be part of. It taught me as a non-user of tobacco, it taught me what I might have to face if I decide to use it one time and other consequences in the long run. Thank you to everyone who is involved in this project for making this a memorable memory for me and all the other youths in my community." -Dolkar Negi "Being a part of the PNYC project for Tobacco Free Sports and Recreations was truly epic. I am one of the supporters for this particular cause and I feel strongly that people should try their best to not smoke around youngsters and set a better example for the future generations. So when talking to the community members of Parkdale I got a general sense of agreement that they too felt the use of tobacco at sports and recreations rather inappropriate. The best part of this experience was that many of these people did not judge the smokers harshly. They even admitted to showing compassion and empathy towards these people. That was the best thing that I could say about the members of Parkdale. From my perception the project was a great successful." -Tashi Lhamo "My name is Yousuf, I am one of the adults that participated in the tobacco-free sports and recreation event held in the Parkdale area. In this event I have experienced working with well organized team that had to achieve the goals of the event from conducting survey and collecting petitions. The work done was most welcomed by the people in the event. We had the chance to share new ideas with those who signed us petitions and conducted surveys. Me myself conducted 12 to 15 surveys even though, the weather wasn't helping us to do more. But I am pretty sure that everyone did his best to come up with something that worked for the event." -Yousuf Aman |
