Success story of the month
Sports, Volunteering and Networking to your Success!
by Tashi Chomphel
Hey there, my name is Tashi and I've lived in the Parkdale for more than five years now. Although it has been quite a long time already, my first meeting with Kalsang was in November 2009 when I attended one of her workshop on Photography. It was my first time getting to know her and the programs she was running at Parkdale Community Information Centre. In May 2010, she sent me a notice via email on the Youth Racquet Sports Tournament held at Masaryk Cowan Community Recreation Centre. During the time, I had just started to enjoy my vacation from my second year at university and was hanging out mostly at the Masaryk Cowan CRC playing sports and the good thing was that the tournament was also held at the same place. So I gladly offered to volunteer and participate in the Youth Racquet Sports Tournament as a table tennis player. As a result, I managed to support the setting of the table tennis area and also won the table tennis championship receiving $10 gift certificate as a winning prize. It was one of my best moments. Not so much later, I went to Kalsang regarding my need for a part-time job. Although I wasn't able to get a hold of one during that time, letting her know about my needs and career goals was the only reason which ultimately led me to my first Job as a Technical Youth Support Worker at PCIC under the Computer Assisted Program funded by Industry Canada. As part of this yearly youth employment program, I got interviewed and got selected for the job to work from October 2010 till March 2011.
In September 2010 I also had the opportunity to volunteer in the youth project, Parkdale Youth for Tobacco Free Sports and Recreation doing outreach at the Parkdale Harvest Festival.
My work as a Technical Youth Support Worker has given me many important experiences to become a good leader and supervisor. It was my first time working with young people, youth and teens alike. There was a little obstacle of adjusting at first but after getting to know them, everything went really well. It was my first time teaching many teens and also for the first time did I feel really useful to help and support them with my computer and mathematics knowledge. So far I've enjoyed this term working with many good young fellows and I've gained a lot of experiences. Even though my term has expired, I continue to stay connected with the youth program by volunteering in my free times.
I am thankful for all the youth I have interacted with through this program and job. I encourage all youth to stay connected with your community and get more engaged with your peers to provide positive role models. I recommend also the importance of contributing your skills, volunteering, getting to know your peers and communities. Last, but not the least, don’t forget to network to your success. Thank you!

White Rose by Dudoul
O White rose,
Why didn’t you answer his love?
Since five years he has been loving you,
Singing for you in pouring rain and
Waiting for you in the longest queue.
He waited for you to turn red,
Waited for you to be his red rose.
You are the most beautiful thing
Ever to have happened in his life,
You are the apple of his eyes.
But at last you turned red,
By his pure blood of love;
But it’s too late to turn around and
Say, “I love you”,
As he has passed away.
The angels came down to earth
To take his loving soul and
Undying love for you,
To the golden gates of heaven.
But there still lies over his soulless body,
On his grave is carved in red,
“Take care of my white rose”.
