Success story of the month
My Successful Journey as a Newcomer Youth - by Tsewang
It was in the most magical month – May 2010, when I got this wonderful opportunity to join the Parkdale Newcomer Youth Program at Parkdale Community Information Centre, where I participated in the weekly language development sessions . I developed my self into a more confident and fluent English speaking student and learnt lots of new things as well. I gained communication skills through the activities and the interactive discussions we had in the program’s sessions and meetings. I participated in the Summer Youth Program from July to August and attended all the seminars and activities to address some of the challenges I faced as a newcomer youth in Toronto.
Since August, I had an opportunity to be a volunteer team member of the youth-led project of Parkdale Newcomer Youth Committee. The project is Parkdale Youth 4 Tobacco Free Sports & Recreation. As an active team member, I took the initiative to become the outreach team leader. I also became the tournament MC (morning) during the wonderful event “Badminton and Table tennis Tournament and Multicultural Dance” where I had great experiences and learnt lots of new things.
As a program participant, I also got to attend several workshops on leadership and Anti-Racism this fall, which were very useful. I also had opportunity to do some volunteering that taught me some important office management skills as well.
Along with these regular programs, I had my co-op placement in the “lakeside Long-term Care” where I have great experiences with the most wonderful staffs and supervisors. Being a 16-year-old student seeking a job, my supervisor referred me to a part time position of “Dietary Aid” in the same reputed organization. I wouldn’t have been referred if I haven’t gained those valuable skills of communication and leadership from the newcomer youth program at PCIC/PIA and most importantly the awesome supervisor Kalsang Dolma, who referred me as well and gave me lots of essential advises and suggestions.
I got this part-time job as a dietary aid starting in December where I will be working in the kitchen and serving meals to the loveliest residents.
Working in this medical organization will certainly help me to pursue my future career in a medical field and would give me a platform to develop the important skills.
I have also been appointed as a team leader for the next project on anti- tobacco and I am sure that I will gain more experiences and I am very excited to work on it!
Finally. I am very grateful to Parkdale Newcomer Youth Committee, Parkdale Community Information Centre and all the fantastic staffs of the Parkdale Public Library!
I would also like to suggest all the newcomer youths out there in Parkdale and other places to be more initiative and join all these wonderful programs, which will help you, develop as a youth and don’t forget to grab these wonderful opportunities that is only for you all!
DREAM REQUIRES EFFORTLESS SLEEP,
WHEREAS, AIM REQUIRES SLEEPLESS EFFORT.
Thank you very much!
