SUMMER STUDENT JOBS for Youth in High Schools (15 to 30)
Job Title: Youth Engagement Team Leader: 2 positions
For: Parkdale Newcomer Youth Summer Program

Tasks and Responsibilities:
● Provide one-on-one mentorship to newcomer & low-income/at risk youth in developing their Leadership Skills for helping tackle their barriers and transition smoothly as new Canadians through: Engagement in Recreation (arts, culture, sports & physical activity); Communication skills, Confidence Building Exercise, Team Work and Understanding Resilience, Peer Mentoring Skills Development; Community and Civic Engagement Guide the youth participants by engaging them through the various summer program activities designed in the areas of Sports, Physical Activity, Computer basics ,Social Media, Internet Safety, ESL, Arts, Leadership, Advocacy, Youth and Community Engagement
● Work closely with youth settlement worker ( program supervisor) to seek guidance and support in relation to co-ordinating the summer program participants’ weekly activities
● Assist the summer program supervisor/youth settlement worker in engaging with the youth as a group and also one on one to provide supportive and mentoring roles for participants during the weekly sessions held over the six weeks period (July 3rd to August 14th)
● Help engage with all youth participants in various hands-on and interactive activities such as mentoring , arts & craft, sports, social media, leadership, mapping goals, civic engagement, communication, and others as per the topic outcomes of newcomer focus group discussions
● Participate in designing/researching for the session outlines with guidance from the program supervisor (youth settlement worker) to make the program engaging in order to provide a creative and rich learning experience
● Support the registration process by helping with outreach and recruit for the program via flyers, social media, networking with peers, phone calls and in person contact
● Serve the community by working 3 hours each week for a community organization in South Parkdale (Senior homes, Soup kitchen, Community Health Centre, Public Library, Masaryk Community Centre, Food Bank, Community Garden etc.,)
● Become knowledgeable about community and non-profit organizations in South Parkdale community to get more engaged with the community be more resourceful to serve as positive role models for the youth community
● Contribute as youth engagement team at the organization’s annual summer fund raising events such as annual Rummage Sale
● Communicate the weekly schedules/locations/activities to the newcomer summer program youth participants in person, via phone and social media channels
● Attend meetings with youth participants and program supervisor to assist in further developing the ongoing program and provide voice and feedback for future projects or programs to benefit youth and community
● Complete a weekly self assessment form and activity report online using Conference Board of Canada’s Employability Skills Chart to identify the experience and skills acquired through this first /early work experience to benefit your career goals
● Other administrative duties related to youth program as assigned by the program supervisor and coordinator (Youth Settlement Worker)
Recommended Skills/Qualifications for both positions:
● Excellent Interpersonal/communication skills both in person and over the phone
● Proven track record as a team player including some team leading and/or positive youth peer mentoring training or volunteering experience in one or two diverse areas of tutoring, recreation, conflict resolution, sports, communication, leadership, outreach and engagement
● Hardworking, punctual and able to multitask with good organizational skills
● Ability to understand newcomer youth barriers and challenges; newcomer youth experience would be an asset
● Proven ability to engage with and mentor youth peers in a positive manner
● Interested in learning new things through active participation
● Ability to take new initiatives and influence others positively
● Appreciation of diversity in backgrounds, culture, abilities and strengths
● Ability to work independently and under minimum supervision
● Basic Computer and Social Media skills
Note: Those seeking this opportunity as their first meaningful Canadian work experience with community leadership experience (including but not limited to peer mentoring education /skills) and fluency in a first language of a dominant South Parkdale Immigrant population would be considered more favourably in the initial screening process
Eligibility:
● Must be a youth (aged 15 to 30), currently in high school and returning to school in the fall
Employment Period: Thursday, July 3rd to Thursday August 14th 2014 (6 weeks)
Schedule Hours: 30 hrs per week
Hourly rate – $11
