Success story of the month
My first Summer Job in Toronto!
by Tenzin Choewang
Hey there, I am Tenzin Choewang, a teenage boy in Grade 11 who came to the Toronto last year in the month of the June. Toronto is so different from any other place I have ever been to, it’s so culturally diverse, very vibrant and a land with so many opportunities. At the beginning it was hard to understand the super-fast English, people spoke here, as time passed I slowly got used to everything but still I was very timid. Since I came in June right when it was school break, I first joined the Newcomer Youth Program of Parkdale Community Information Centre and Parkdale Intercultural Association for two months. Later, since September, I joined many newcomer groups at my school (Central Tech), Parkdale Newcomer Youth Committee (PNYC of PCIC/PIA) and at Culture link and all of these programs helped me gain a very important thing that I was lacking, ‘confidence”. I am also an editorial member of this youth monthly newsletter, Youth SPARK!
Months passed by as I joined the school soccer and co-ed volley ball team, each day we had practice or games going to other schools. Meeting students like me was such a great experience and along the way I made networks at other schools too. After the season finished this year, summer was on the brink and I saw all students flocking around their guidance counsellor and trying to get a job, It was so new to me because back home we didn’t work or have an opportunity like here to look for student jobs. My friend, Phunstok, forced me to apply for one at TDSB Summer Jobs and I passed the interview! I got the job and I am really happy. I do wish that all other youth out there working hard will be successful too.

White Rose by Dudoul
O White rose,
Why didn’t you answer his love?
Since five years he has been loving you,
Singing for you in pouring rain and
Waiting for you in the longest queue.
He waited for you to turn red,
Waited for you to be his red rose.
You are the most beautiful thing
Ever to have happened in his life,
You are the apple of his eyes.
But at last you turned red,
By his pure blood of love;
But it’s too late to turn around and
Say, “I love you”,
As he has passed away.
The angels came down to earth
To take his loving soul and
Undying love for you,
To the golden gates of heaven.
But there still lies over his soulless body,
On his grave is carved in red,
“Take care of my white rose”.
