My Story
an interview with youth Mohani Nirmal by Karma Gyatso
This interview was completed in August 2012 after Mohani has completed her summer job term with the newcomer youth program under the Summer Students Job program of HRSDC. Youth SPARK would like to thank Mohani and Karma for contributing to the youth community.
Could you tell a bit about yourself?
My name is Mohani Nirmal I’ve been in Canada for almost two years now and I’ve been volunteering for the Parkdale Newcomer Youth Program for almost a year now. I’m still going to high school which is Parkdale Collegiate Institute where I have only half a year of high school left. I plan to attend college after that but I’m still unsure about what I want to study there.
What is your involvement with the Newcomer Youth Program?
I started to volunteer here with the program six months ago and now I’m currently working under Miss Kalsang as my supervisor as I’m hired as one of the team leaders for the youth summer program. I work together with two other summer program staff, members Norbu and Karma. My main duty is help with planning for the summer program activities and to help ensure that youth members attend the sessions with enthusiasm. I also remind them to be on time and that they follow all the health and safety rules including the program policy and keep track of their emergency contact just in case something happens.
How do you think the program has helped you develop?
Being a part of this program has helped me developed a lot especially as a team leader, it helped me with my communication skills and public speaking because when I first joined this program I use to be very shy and I was the quiet one in the sessions and it also helps to builds myself a better self esteem. It helped me to become a better team leader and also a better employee.
How has your experience in the newcomer youth program contributed to your success?
My experience in the newcomer youth program contributed a lot to my success because I got my first job working for this organization and I also have great co workers that look out for me, and it has helped/ taught me to be a better employee.
Is there anyone in your life who has inspired you or motivated you to be your best?
I would have to say my mom because she is my role model and she’s always there for me and she keeps pushing me /encouraging me to be the best I can be in life.
What does success mean to you?
My definition of success is learning new things having a good education and a healthy relationship with my family and friends and also perusing a job that I would love to have after I finish college.
Do you believe that you are a role model for the youth of today and the leaders of tomorrow?
I believe I am a role model for the youths because I try my hardest every day to provide a positive and welcoming attitude and do the best I can and to help out the youths in the sessions that we have.
Any advice you can give to the newcomer youths reading this?
I would encourage all the youths to take the time and be a part of this group, where you can learn and gain so many new experiences and gain a lot of new skills which will be beneficial to you sometime in your life.
