[Click to read the Youth Program Policy]
The Immigrant Settlement and Adaption Program (ISAP), Youth Program is a partnership between Parkdale Intercultural Association and Parkdale Community Information Centre. The Program aims to reach out extensively to newcomer youth and help them adjust to a new life in Canada through a variety of social, academic and recreational activities.
In addition to delivering specific programs, the PCIC/PIA team forges partnerships with other service providers to develop more accessible settlement services for the newcomer youths. Our goal is to empower these youths by encouraging them to engage with different community activities and integrate fully into the Canadian system.
The program currently runs a weekly, youth-led peer-support program, "Peer Tutoring Club" to assist youth in achieving academic success. Youth help youth ontheir home work assignments or any other academic assistance they require in order to succeed in their school works.
The program initiated a youth leadership group, “Parkdale Newcomer Youth Committee” (PNYC) in 2010 which comprises of in focus youth client representatives who work as a team in leading projects and other program activities to foster youth community and civic engagement for their economic and social success.

Every summer, the program offers interactive youth group sessions to provide life and employability skills, mentoring, communication, and leadership trainings to youth with an added opportunity to earn community hours. The projects and summer program coordinated under the program offers youth with valuable experience and skills to take them further in their career/academic goals and social well being. Youth also build on their community and civic engagement through their participation in the various program activities. Over 50 youth have directly gained employment either within our organizations under various programs or via referrals to other jobs where they gained meaningful employment.
The program also offers additional workshops and information sessions to provide additional learning support as per need assessments conducted through focus group sessions, evaluations and meetings with the youth. Since 2009 the workshops offered to youth ranged from health and fitness, pre-employment skills, communication, team work, problem solving, documentary film making, poster design, effective social media, peer mentoring and networking, community engagement, youth advocacy, leadership and others. The program partnered with the following agencies to provide workshops: Toronto Public Health, JobStart, Parkdale Community Legal Services, Parkdale Community Health Centre, YMCA, YWCA, Toronto Public Library, YES, Greenest City, and a diverse group of individuals/community members dedicated to serving the community.
Since 2010, our program has received support from Toronto Public Health's "Investment in Youth Engagement" Initiative project grants and have thus far launched successfully four youth-led health advocacy projects focusing on tobacco-free sports/recreation and smoke-free movies (SFM). Due to our successful delivery of these youth projects, PCIC was invited to join the Ontario Smoke Free Coalition and Tobacco Control Area Network (Toronto) as a community partner in 2011.
