Youth Success Stories of the Month
First of all, I would like to thank my family for always giving me the strength and care. I am also very thankful for my Newcomer Youth Program where I gained the tools that I needed to get summer job. Without them, I wouldn’t have gotten into YIPI (Youth In Policing Initiative). I first heard about this opportunity from my family; my older brother had been a former YIPI member. So my family encouraged me to join YIPI. I am also very grateful to the youth employment sessions that the Newcomer Youth Program had given to all the youths in my community. In these sessions, I learned a lot about how to get a job; it taught me from the very basic like how to read job posters to making of my own resume. I was especially very thankful to the reference letter that Kalsang wrote to my application for YIPI. The interview tips that I received from her were also very helpful. I want to give all the people warm thanks for helping me throughout this process. For all the youths who are still seeking for summer job, I would say to never give up and be open to all the other good opportunities to make your summer fun and wonderful!”

My name is Harshita Patel. I graduated from Parkdale Collegiate Institute this year. I started volunteering at PCIC in October 2009 as a Peer Tutor for the Peer Tutoring Program. I also helped out in many other workshops. After volunteering at PCIC and working with Kalsang, I have gained a lot of experience in working with peers. I also learned about communicating with people in a professional manner. I am also a member of the Parkdale Newcomer Youth Committee (PNYC), where I have and am still gaining leadership skills and also working with a diverse group of youth. My experience at PCIC and PNYC has helped me to get a job with the Toronto Police in the Youth In Policing Initiative (YIPI).
Kalsang has also written reference letters for many Scholarships that I applied for such as the TD Canada Trust Scholarship for Leadership in the Community and the Kiwanis Club Matching Scholarship. I received the Kiwanis Club Matching Scholarship and I believe Kalsang’s reference letter helped me a lot in receiving it. I would like to thank Kalsang for all her help and also giving me an opportunity to be a part of the PNYC. Harshita Patel Parkdale Resident, PNYC member PCI Graduate |
