Newcomer Youth Program - ISAP
The Immigrant Settlement and Adaption Program (ISAP), Youth Program is a partnership between Parkdale Intercultural Association and Parkdale Community Information Centre. The Program aims to reach out extensively to newcomer youths and helps them adjust to a new life in Canada through a variety of social, academic and recreational activities.
In addition to delivering specific programs, the PCIC/PIA team forges partnerships with other service providers to develop more accessible settlement services for the newcomer youths. Our goal is to empower these youths by encouraging them to engage with different community activities and integrate fully into the Canadian system.
The program currently runs two weekly sessions: English Language Skills Development and Peer Tutoring Club. The non-credit English language program provides the newcomer youth with an open learning environment where they get support in improving communication skills through various interactive lessons and activities. They are able to practice communication (speaking, reading, listening and writing) with their peer mentors who are more fluent in the language. In the Peer Tutoring Club, the youth get help with their home work assignments or any other academic assistance from their peers who are volunteer youth tutors.
The program also offers additional workshops and information sessions once a month on average to provide additional learning support as per the need assessment conducted through evaluations and meetings with the youth. Since 2009 the workshops offered to youth ranged from health and fitness, pre-employment skills, communication, team work, problem solving, documentary film making, poster design, community engagement, youth advocacy, leadership and outdoor trips. The program partnered with the following agencies to provide workshops: Toronto Public Health, JobStart, Parkdale Community Legal Services, Parkdale Community Health Centre, YMCA, YWCA, Toronto Public Library, YES, Greenest City, and individual artists/community members dedicated to serving the community.
The program also provides the youth with volunteering opportunities with the program, summer student employment and related opportunities through proper referrals in order to meet their career and community engagement goals.
Some of the other major settlement services provided to youth include; assistance with school admission procedures, referrals to language or educational assessment centres, governmental forms, legal, health and housing referrals, interpretation, pre-employment assistance and referrals to related services.
